A Ray of Hope or Mare Illusion

(Hamda Naz, Lahore)

Women the sub-ordinates, the poor, the weaker, the timid and the vulnerable minority… The minority who shares 60% cake of total population of Pakistan, are still worthless. The country who does not value these tiny, less privileged group, is known as castle of Islam. A castle that cannot protect his 60% population. Social construction of inferiority has led the way towards women activism as an outcome of severe oppression. Statistics of sustainable development showed that 43% people of Pakistan are living in vicious circle of poverty; then question arises regarding parameter of poverty? Although poverty measures by the government are still fruitless, state is trying optimally for poverty reduction through the given parameters of millennium development goals that is poverty free world for all. Undoubtedly, wrong scales and cultural differences served as a free poverty for all manifesto. Overall poverty situation is digestible, but how it affects oppressed minority is weirder. Harassment rate is multiplied; more the less, to make rape incidents publically is another question mark on women dignity.

In male dominated society women are exploited at many levels from domestic to workplace. Sometimes those who are keen advocates of human rights follow duel policy. Their contradiction in words and deeds, like much discussion about women emancipation with little results, sexual harassment, unnecessary restrictions: these sensitive issues are widely discussed on various platforms without practical implementation.

Men are licentious in the name of religion to exploit women. Terrorist organizations are also anti women that condemn co-education; as some leading women welfare organizations are under terrorists’ threats. Cultural values suggest reverence for women being a mother sister and daughter only. Hidden curriculum is involved in this mass gender segregation, in the same lines department of gender study in a famous university of Karachi is still named as women studies department. Being a sociologist, only hope or mere illusion is a way to live a peaceful life.
