The word English comes from the country of England. But people didn’t always speak English here. In fact 2000 years ago, England was not the name of country, and the English people don’t live there.

At that time, another group of people the Celts live in that place that is now England. They didn’t speak English. The name of their language was Celtic then groups of people came to England from other countries in northern Europe. The Celts had to leave England when these people came.

Today a few people in Scotland, Ireland, wales and France still speak Celtic language and there are only one or two words in English that are from Celtic. But the names of some towns and places in England are from Celtic language i-e Kent, York, Thames and London.

The English language started about 1500 years ago in England. Three groups of people came to England the angels, the Saxons, and jutes. These people brought their language to England with them. After the time three languages became the one new language English. The name English comes from angels. They lived most of England. English means angels land or country of the angels.
