KASHMIR PROBLEM

(Anum Naeem, karachi)

' K ' in Pakistan stands for Kashmir. The people of Kashmir are 90% Muslims. As much it must form a part of Pakistan . It has become an apple of discard between Bharat and Pakistan.

Pakistan and Bharat became free nations after partition in 1947. The Indian state were given the option to join either Pakistan or Bharat according to the will of the people. It could be determined through plebecite. But the Sikh ruler of Kashmir joined Bharat against the will of people mostly Muslims. The Kashmiries protested. They were arrested. Many Muslims were killed.

Kashmir was the cause of two wars (1947 and 1965) between the two countries cease fire was ordered by UNO in 1948. Bharat took the matter to the UN. According to UNO resolutions. Bharat was asked to hold plebicite. India has no regard for UNO resolutions. In 1989 Kashmiries rose against the Indian Government. They demand freedom Bharat has sent 5,000,00 soldiers to suppress the freedom movement. They claim Kashmir "Atoot-Angun" of indian. More than 50,000 Kashmiries have been killed. India is guilty of violation of human rights and worst crimes. It is at test case for the UNO.

But the UN mandated plebecite makes no provision for an independent Kashmir. All the solutions seem to bring geo-political problems of their own Kashmir cannot settled through was because all three countries with state in the matter have nuclear capability.

What then is the best political solution to Kashmir ? Should Kashmir be given independence? Is the status quo the best solution?

Formalize the existing arrangement (make Loc into a permanent border, officially giving up PoK to Pakistan) or have an arrangement to share Kashmir valley with Pakistan (a small portion of the current state of J&K). No other solution is feasible given the present conditions.

Kashmir is a Muslim majority state. So, one might simplistically argue that India should vacate the place and give it away to Pakistan. But, it is not so simple.

The second solution might be unpalatable to many Indians, but I believe we don't have any other credible solution that could help India move on. We have other things to worry about - we cannot just keep dog fighting in the snow and lose our precious men.
