Miss Tahira Inam wrote an
article about Mayan calendar and Qiyamat. The article had some inaccuracies and
i am writing this to correct those.
The Maya is not a religion but a civilization. The mayan people were very
advanced in Astronomy and Astrology, infact they were totaly devoted to
astronomy and were so advanced in astronomical knowledge that there solar
calendar even today 1000th os second more accurate than the modern calendar we
have. The mayan book that Ms. Tahira is referring to is not a book but a
calendar with astrological predictions. Basically Mayans believed that time is
cyclical so same kind of events happen during similar times. There calendar ends
on Dec 21 2009 but they never said that the world would end too but their
prediction is that after that time world will enter into a tumultuous and
critical phase. They might be right that world will enter the final phase and
rest of the Nishanian will come to pass after that date. Also the earth will not
meet sun on that date as the writer have eluded but there will be astronomical
alignment between sun earth and the center of our Galaxy milky way in other
words they will form a straight line and in Astrology according to mayans this
phenomenon have great significance. Another point is that mayan civilization had
such a advance knowledge of astronomy that they figured out more than 1000 years
ago that Earth takes 2600 years to complete a cycle in movement of its Axis.
Earth revolves around the sun and at the same time it spin's on its Axis. The
revolution around the sun gives us the year and its spinning around axis gives
us night and day. When Earth spins around its Axis it wobbles a bit this
wobbling phenomenon takes 2600 years to complete cycle and with this phenomenon
our view of the sky changes a little bit over 2600 years that's why we dont
notice it. Some people speculate that when this cycle is completed Earth
switches its poles meaning north becomes south and south becomes north this is
significant because of our magnetic field during this transition stage the
magnetic field of the earth that shields us from solar, weakens. Scientists have
found conclusive evidence that polar shift have happened many times in the past.
Now its interesting to point out that when it happens the earth might start to
spin in opposite side and hence Sun might rise from the west even for once as
our faith indicates. So the conclusion is that Mayan calendars long count ends
on DEc 21st 2009 but it might begin the cycle again the next day just like our
own solar calendar begins when dec ends all of the rest is mere speculation.
Only ALLAH knows when qiyamat will commence.
