Trees may be our most potent reminder of nature's
power and beauty. For thousands of years, trees have inspired poets,
scientists, warriors and priests, and they remain a living symbol of the
glory of the natural world and its importance in our lives.

Lone Cypress
Standing on a granite hillside off California's scenic 17-mile drive in
Pebble Beach, the Lone Cypress is a western icon, and has been called
one of the most photographed trees in North America. The tree is located
between Cypress Point Golf Course and the Pebble Beach Golf Links, two
of world's most well known golf courses. Possibly as old as 250 years,
the cypress has been scarred by fire and held in place with cables for
65 years. |

Bodhi Tree
The Bodhi Tree, also known as Bo (from the [Tamil language|அரச
மரம்]Sinhalese Bo) and 'peepal tree' in Nepal and Bhutan, was a large
and very old Sacred Fig tree (Ficus religiosa) located in Bodh Gaya,
India, under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher later known
as Gautama Buddha, is said to have achieved enlightenment, or Bodhi. In
religious iconography, the Bodhi tree is recognizable by its
heart-shaped leaves, which are usually prominently displayed. Bodhi
trees are planted in close proximity to every Buddhist monastery. |

Tree of Life
The Tree of Life (Shajarat-al-Hayat) in Bahrain is approximately 400
year-old, 9.75 m (32 ft) high Prosopis cineraria tree located 2 km (1.2
mi) from Jebel Dukhan. The tree stands on top of a 7.6 m (25 ft) high
sandy tell that formed around a 500-year-old fortress. The tree is a
local tourist attraction, as it is the only major tree growing in the
area. The tree is visited by approximately 50,000 tourists every year
and the tree often is damaged by graffiti carvings. |

Tree of Hippocrates
The Tree of Hippocrates is the plane tree (or platane, in Europe) under
which, according to the legend, Hippocrates of Kos (considered the
father of medicine) taught his pupils the art of medicine. Paul of
Tarsus purportedly taught here as well. The Platanus in Kos is an
oriental plane (Platanus orientalis), with a crown diameter of about 12
metres, said to be the largest for a plane tree in Europe. |

Major Oak
The Major Oak is a large English oak tree near the village of Edwinstowe
in the heart of Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, England. According to
local folklore, it was Robin Hood's shelter where he and his merry men
slept. It weighs an estimated 23 tons, has a girth of 33 feet (10 metres),
and is about 800–1000 years old. In June 2002, the Tree Council
designated the Major Oak one of fifty Great British Trees in recognition
of its place in the national heritage.
