Water problem in pakistan

(Ali Mehdi, Karachi)

Water is a very essential element for the nature we cannot live without of water. Our body’s 90% based on water. 3 ½ of the world segment is consist on water, which we can discover in the shape of water canals, rivers and sea but the world is also facing water shortage problem and the shortage of water problem is quite big problem that we are facing in cities and villages in Pakistan people travel millions of miles in search of water even small children daily travel along with their mothers carrying water on their heads in the scorching heat on one hand.

Huge cities are also confronting with the same problem of water, cities like Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Islamabad where people migrate from all over the Pakistan for employment opportunities and better future specially living in flats are facing shortage of water problem cause of lack of planning from the government.

THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM IN PAKISTAN
Our irrigation system is the largest in the world but its infrastructure is quite deprived, in transmission and seepage we lost almost two-third of water supply if the irrigation system is sufficiently repaired we can save 68 MAF of water for our crops but on the other hand farmer and landlord can save more and more water by improving farming methods to preserve water and increase productivity of different crops.

WATER AND ENERGY CRISIS
Hydropower is the main source of energy in our country but again shortage of new dams and unwillingness of governments to create new dams to preserve water and besides that there is other reasons are also involve of like incompetents of government machinery lack of fund and corruption and neglecting old dams is escalating the energy crisis in Pakistan dams are the main and cheapest source of generating electricity but on almost every year a huge amount of water wasted in the sea because of non-availability of dams in our country and political parties and landlords never agreed to create more dams for water preservation.

“If today more dams were available, all the floodwater could have been restored and ultimately used for irrigation,” Dr. Samar Mubarak and, former chairman of Pakistan’s National Engineering and Scientific Commission.

SOLUTION
Pakistan should focus on water management cause it is the key to prosperity in our country while keep in mind that our economy is agricultural based and water is the back bone of it on one hand so much water wasted in monsoon season while on the other hand India is building more dams to secure and preserve more and more water for their energy agriculture sector if our political governments will not take immediate measures to tackle the shortage of water problem by building new dams in all provinces in near future we could face a huge amount of shortage agricultural goods in our country and importing these goods from India or elsewhere could decrease our foreign exchange reserve consistently is not good for our economic growth and on the hand if we could able to build more dams and cultivate more and more value added crops and increase our agricultural productivity will boost our economy and generate employment in rural areas and our foreign exchange reserve could be increase which is good sign for our economy.
