Mom I Thought Ramadan was a Fasting Month

(Nasir Naqvi, Islamabad)

Asalam O Alaikum friends! Yesterday, I was scrolling on facebook and i came to see a Picture that was completely showing that "What WE People Use To Do In Ramadan". Check it out.

Yeah it's seems true when we talk about typical Pakistani Culture. As soon as Ramadan starts, We people start buying and storing food more than our regular usage during rest of all months. Well we may take it in two senses One is positive and other is negative. Postie sense is concerned with Allah and HIS blessing. In Positive sense we may presume that it's the " Blessing Of Allah " which means that Allah bless us with more food to eat in the holy month of Ramadan.

While the negative sense is concerned with us. It means that we put the message of Ramadan aside. Instead of following the teachings of the month of Ramadan , We start following the teaching of others. For example, In Iftar, if our neighbors prepare "Biryanni" (A Typical Asian Dish of Rice) and somehow we came to know about it, we also start thinking of preparing Biryani without keeping in mind if our sources are enough or not. In simple words I can say "We are just competing with one an other". Actually media is playing a bit negative role in this regard. I'll target few Cooking Shows and Advertising Campaigns by different food products companies. Well, on the cooking shows what does the Chefs do, one day they're preparing BLA BLA BLA and the other day another BLA BLA BLA.. and also ask people to try at home. They should be asked "What poor people will prepare in food?" On the other hand the Advertising Campaigns Shows A Huge Daster Khawan full of food variety that forces people to have a daster khawan like that at home to satisfy their needs. So they buy more food item in Ramadan.

But it's not the message or teachings of Ramadan. Though Ramadan has many messages and teachings in may aspects. But one of them is that Ramadan teaches us to look for poor peoples' needs for food. When we keep fast, we feel the hunger and thrust for food and water that make us realize "How those people feel , who have nothing to eat and drink." .

But we take this month as an event of enjoying every sort of Food. We offer and enjoy Iftar parties at expensive hotels and restaurants. We also give Iftar parties to our Friends and Relatives. It's not bad. I'm not condemning theses acts or Iftar parties but I'm pointing out the true fact that "Why we don't ask poor people to join our Iftar Parties. Why don't we take them to Expensive hotels and Restaurants for Iftar. why don't we invite them at our homes for Iftar." I guess, i have become emotional and going away from the context of topic.

Though five fingers are not equal, there are many people who take care of poor people but majority of us do the same as i mentioned above. So Conclusion is that We should focus on the teachings and messages of Ramadan and have a look around us, Where We Are Now, Where We Should Stand?
