Tragedies Of Life

(Sadia Khalid, Lahore)

THERE ARE TWO TRAGEDIES IN LIFE, ONE IS NOT TO GET YOUR HEART’S DESIRE, THE OTHER IS TO GET IT. The quotation is from Bernard Shaw‘s play “MAN AND SUPERMAN” . It applies to human life rather accurately. The non fulfillment of a desire is like a fire burning deep inside the heart without a flame. If we desire for a Red Ferrari/Bungalow and a bank balance then we must have the necessary money resources to translate it into a practice. If we don’t do it, then we encounter with a tragedy and we get it. Another chain of complications raises that to maintain the wealth or add more to it, leads to the pursuit of adopting illegal means to achieve the end.

If we take the example of MACBETH, in the tragic play “MACBETH” by Shakespeare. He becomes restless and he is assured of kingship of Scotland by three witches. Lady Macbeth incites and manipulates Macbeth to murder the king, the king murdered by Macbeth. Thereafter he commits a chain of murders for keeping his kingship intact. Macbeth shows a troubled look on his face. He says that it is better to be dead like King than to be alive and suffer the mental torture. Lady Macbeth loses balance of her mind and becomes mad. She dies and Macbeth is also killed. The desire and over ambition of becoming emperor of the kingdom of Scotland destroys his life. It’s a great saying that:

“AMBITION DESTROYS ITS POSSESOR.”

When a man desire for something, it become a passion, ambition or a destination for him. If a man cant’t achieves its destination he himself destroys his life due to extreme frustration/depression or after achieving the destination, the passion act like a poison in his life. In both conditions his life becomes a living hell which ends up at great tragedy. It is rather impossible to keep ambition within the reasonable limits. An ambition ceases to be an ambition if it could be restricted within limits. If there is anything without limits that is ambition. Napoleon won victories after victories and attained all powers of Europe. The European powers joined together to crush Napoleon’s ambition. He was crushed at the hands of his ambition and desires. Likewise Alexander had the ambition of conquering the whole world but did not succeed. These examples from the history indicate the unsatisfaction of the heart and soul whether desires fulfilled or not.
