Abortion; a wanted crime

(Rabia Hashim, Karachi)

The World Health Organization defines abortion as the process of terminating the unwanted pregnancy. It is done because of any kind of minimal economical or medical standards. The ratio of terminating an unwanted pregnancy is increasing day by day in Pakistan. It is becoming a hot topic among media and Non government organizations. According to the Bilquis Edhi, almost 15-20 woman walk in to Edhi house every month to terminate their pregnancy. This crime is not restricted to some particular kind of class. Besides the religious boundaries, the abortion is not safe for the mothers. The reason is those who want to abort their unwanted pregnancy deals with inexperienced medical staff for this crime. Thus face drastic medical issues after the abortion.

According to a report made by World Health Organization in 2005, South and Central Asia have the highest rates of unsafe abortions, according to the World Health Organization 2005 report.

According to a 2004 Population Council report, every year about 890,000 abortions occur in Pakistan. The reasons can vary but the number of unwanted abortions has been drastically increased since past six years. The major reason of abortions in Pakistan is not or very little use of contraceptives. What is important here is to increase awareness among the men and women about contraception. There should be seminars, public service messages and door to door awareness about the use of contraception and the myths about contraceptives.
