THE FOSTERING OF EMPATHY: REFLECTING ON THE IMPACT OF CRITICISM AND JUDGMENT

(Aliza Jawaid, Karachi)

People often engage in the practice of criticizing and making fun of others in today’s world, without taking into an account the detrimental effects that this negativity can have on person’s mental health. This article portray the reality of passing judgement and the need of showing empathy towards others.
EFFECTS OF CRITICISM
Disconcertingly, people frequently overlook the emotional toll that their mockery of others may have by failing to put themselves in their shoes. The increasing prevalence of trolling as a kind of entertainment exacerbates the situation by making it harder to distinguish between genuine concern for the targeted individuals and mere entertainment.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES AS JUDGEMENT FACTOR
Physical appearance has become a common target, with people making fun of one’s complexion, facial features, and other uncontrollable characteristics. It’s important to understand that these characteristics are gifts from the creator to each individual. Criticizing someone’s appearance is akin to passing judgment on the creator inadvertently rather than just the individual.
You all must have read the poem “the Mountain and the squirrel” in school. Have you ever tried to look at the real aspect that the poet tries to convey through the poem. Its not merely a poem, but an emotion that contains a moral that nothing in this world is useless. You can’t judge the things on the basis of appearance is that bigger or smaller. Each entity possess different qualities that made it unique.
BEYOND PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Voice is another aspect of identity that is subject to criticism even though it is not within a person’s control. The realization that people are powerless over these innate qualities ought to make people re evaluate the rationale behind making assumptions about someone based only on their voice or physical attractiveness.
IMPACT OF BEAUTY STANDARDS
Take a moment to think about the idea of beauty standards. Those who are lucky enough to fit these criteria frequently don’t realize that how they look is a reflection of who they were born to be, not a mark of success. In this era you all must be aware of K-pop. They are trending all over the world. Almost half of the population listen to their music. K-pop idols have to face very rigid beauty standards. BTS one of biggest boyband were subjected to great criticism at the time they debut. But through their hard work they have proved themselves, that no one can stop them, not even criticism. But don’t you think that it would be better if they weren’t troll or criticize by the people. Even today, people criticize them that they look like girls, they do makeup, their voice is not good enough. Is there any appropriate justification to criticize people?
The criticism goes beyond physical characteristics to include a range of life choices and approaches to overcoming obstacles. It raises the question: Who gave them the right to interfere in someone else’s life and invades their privacy. Do we really have the right to examine and critique the choices made by others?
CRITICISM LEADS TO INSECURITY
Put yourself in the position of someone who is constantly the target of criticism and ridicule. These encounters can lead to intense feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. We all have an obligation to stop and think about how our words might affect other people. Whether done knowingly or unknowingly, it creates an atmosphere that leads to insecurity. It is a mistake that needs to be acknowledged and corrected.
CONCLUSION : STRIVING FOR EMPATHY
To sum up, it’s never too late to practice mindfulness and empathy. Consider the possible effects of your words for a moment before mocking someone else or passing judgment. Instead of adding to a climate of insecurity, make an effort to cultivate compassion and understanding. Being conscious of how our actions affect other people is the first step to become a more thoughtful and compassionate individual.
