Earth Preservation by Tree Planting

(Sabir Hussain Shah, Islamabad)

Ask yourself a question, “Am I trying to enhance and protect the quality of life for future generations of this planet - earth?” If no, then start to protect this planet by some green ideas and investments.

Here is a good story: An old man was planting a tree. Someone said, “Why are you bothering so much? Whenever it will bear fruit you will not be in this world.” The old man replied; just like my grandparents planted the trees and I have used their fruits, I am planting now for my future generations. Although it seems a fictitious story but it has a great philosophy for thinkers. Because we are eradicating our valuable trees unconsciously i.e. without knowing the facts that what are the impacts of forests on the environment? How they prevent the disasters of floods?

What policies are we adopting to improve our earth and its environment? And to what extent we are strictly following these policies, so that our future generations can find this world in a most beautiful way. Environmental pollution and excessive use of earth resources have created many problems. We must put attention on these problems. Pollution is becoming a part of our environment just like running blood in our veins.

Brief History of Earth Day:
In 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson observed that the oil has polluted badly his beautiful coasts, while roaming on the coasts of Santa Barbara (California). After his observations, he struggled hard to aware the masses about the importance of clean environment. At last in 22 April, 1970, World Day of Environment (Earth Day) was inaugurated. Ten lacs Americans participated in this program and condemned the environmental pollution-spreading factories, oil, power plants, raw sewage, loss of forests and air pollution. The countries got rid of the environmental pollution by their sense of responsibility. Now Earth Day is being celebrated every year to stimulate the awareness and appreciation for the earth’s natural environment.

Pakistan Environmental Protection Council (PEPC):
Pakistan Environment Protection Council (PEPC) has been formulated in 1984 for the protection of environment. Pakistan is focusing on main environmental issues to improve the living standards of its masses. This council has been paying attention on the municipal and liquid industrial wastes, industrial emission of gases, smoke emitting from vehicles and deforestation.

The improper use of energy, raw materials, water, land and other resources are the main causes of pollution in the air, water and land. Most of the earth’s degradation and pollution occurred in the last 250 years after industrial revolution.

The temperature of the earth is increasing day by day because the greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane) trap heat and light from the sun. It is called global warming. It serious affects many people, animals and plants.

The greenhouse effect makes the earth able for living people on it. But if there are large quantities of gases, the earth becomes too hot to be survived that results in the death of humans, plants and animals. People are doing so many things to reduce global warming for the protection of earth. Planting trees is one of them for the conservation of the earth.

Forests affect the climate in the following ways:

● They capture carbon dioxide gas from atmosphere and keep the earth cool.
● They make the cloudy weather by evaporating water to the atmosphere; that helps in
cooling the earth.
● They absorb a lot of sunlight and save the earth from getting warm.
● They reduce the force of wind and thus prevent the soil from erosion.

Consequently, every person must try to minimize the environmental pollution. If we struggle for crushing the pollution and preserve our planet, then we will have to plant a tree at least in each six months and will have to take care of it like a child. It will not only fulfill our deficiency of oxygen but will also reduce the increasing temperature of the earth.
