Climate changes in Pakistan

(Ahsan Amin, Peshawar)

Pakistan is suffering from climate changing effect. Not long ago in 2010 we have witnessed a flood that still haunt us and those who suffered from it are still recovering from that disaster. The effect of such climate disasters are very catastrophic for developing nation and it take a long time to recover from it. Pakistan is at 7th in the list of those countries who are suffering from climate changes. This change in the climate possesses a threat not only for Pakistan but for the world as well. As the climate is changing day by day which is harmful for everyone on this planet and this climate change is constantly giving us signals about its mass destruction abilities through different type of natural disaster.

This climate change is melting our glaciers down in himalayan and its melting rate is increasing as the day passes. It is also affecting our timing of monsoon season and the strength of rainfall in this season which is directly affecting our agriculture sector and energy sector as our agriculture sector and farmer are financially very weak they are not adaptive to rapid change which is costing them and as result their productive and efficiency is decreasing and their output is affected. Our farmer is uneducated and they don’t have any knowledge of its geographical and demographical change so it is necessary that we give them information about changing pattern of the weather so they can plan accordingly.

Due to climate change people are migrating and this migration is taking place from environmentally fragile areas of Pakistan. This climate change migration is producing environmental refugees for which the government of Pakistan has to formulate the strategies and make the policies in a way which will help these migrants. This issue must be addressed properly so that the migrants who are facing socio- economic problem and health problem are resolved. This is problem must not be taken for granted because this is a humanitarian issue and the better policy must be introduce in accordance with it.

As we are living in era of industrialization and the industries are developed al l over the world and they are focused on mass production and operating 24/7 and as a result they are emitting gases which have high temperature and these gases are called greenhouse gases when these gases are emitted into the atmosphere they lead to global warming and as result our climate changes. Environmental scientist has said that if these emitting gases are not reduced then the global temperature will be raise in future from 1.1 to 6.5 degree centigrade. The major industrialized countries which are contributing in global warming are United State, Canada, Russia, Germany, United Kingdome, Australia, Korea and Japan.

The truths is that the developing countries and under developed countries are not responsible for this climate change and these countries contribute only 10 percent in emission of carbon dioxide in annual emission but these least developed or developing countries are highly affected by this climate change. The reason behind this is their geographical location, socio economic factors and many other factors contribute as well. Pakistan name also come under the developing countries and also is facing the similar situation. Our country only emits 0.43 percent of greenhouse gases which is noting as compare to other developed countries and comes at 135th number in the world for emission of carbon dioxide and yet it is at 7th in the world among those countries which are facing changing climate problem.

In Pakistan the main reason for climate change is deforestation we thing burning of fossils and fuels are the only factors which contribute in the emission of carbon dioxide but we don’t know that the cutting of the trees done the same because trees are responsible to reduce 50 percent of carbon dioxide from the environment we have to plant new trees in our forest and in our cities so that this threat of climate change in minimized. According to report 13 million hectares of forests all around the globe are cut down yearly.
