| WAQAR AHMED SOOMRO (Student) Bachelors Degree LLB (Hons) Islamabad
| Assalamoalaikum, I'm doing LLB from IIUI and am about to cross the threshold of last year. it is four years degree. we study Shariah alongwith Law. I've been a good student throughout the study but now I feel I don't have a practical legal approach though still I'm studying. I know little bit about my nature and have been proved emotional. as for as the financial background is concerned, I belong to lower middle class family. now i've four options in my mind: either to take competetive exam or to study further, i.e., LLM, or to join judiciary or to do legal practice. I want to ask which sort of field would be suitable for me? Plz counsel me keeping in view the information which I've already furnished before. thanks waiting for ur reply

| | Salam Waqar Ahmad, My name is Riaz and Law qualified and currently working in Askari as inhouse counsel and operation officer besides experience in some international organization like UN.
I read your query and seem to be concerned as you are standing at the cross road of your career and any step may lead you to specialized area of Law.
Its good to join Judiciary and I don't know which province you belong too but usually Judiciary does not announce their vacant position of magistrate annually rather they advertise on need basis. So prepared yourself and when opportunity comes apply for it but don't sit to wait for vacancies yet to be advertised in judiciary as magistrate and civil judges. I myself applied for judiciary in 2005 in NWFP PCS commission for civil judges cum judicial magistrates and only ONE civil judge vacancy was allocated to our Zone as vacancies are further distributed among different zones in the province, keeping their backwardness. In my turn, our zone 4 was allocate only one seat out of 30 over all seats and i came runner up in 5th position.
You can do private practice but you will need to invest your time in creating your client and marketing yourself as lawyer in your area as well as in profession. Your hard work can be minimized if you have any relative in your family who is doing private legal practice and you use his network of clientage.
Besides, living in Islamabad, You can also apply for international NGOs and firms but You must have some basic ideas of International Human Rights Laws, concerning basic right of human being to become a human rights activists. It is rewarding professional in terms of finance as well as social noble cause.
As u have also good Islamic laws background, you can also apply for Islamic banking sector as Islamic corporate lawyer and if interested, can look for opportunities in gulf in Islamic financial markets.
Take care and wish you best of luck.
