It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “A Bedouin came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘I have seen the new crescent tonight.’ He said: ‘Do you bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Get up, O Bilal, and announce to the people that they should fast tomorrow.’”

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَوْدِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سِمَاكُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيُّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَبْصَرْتُ الْهِلَالَ اللَّيْلَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قُمْ يَا بِلَالُ فَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ أَنْ يَصُومُوا غَدًا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ:‏‏‏‏ هَكَذَا رِوَايَةُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَرَوَاهُ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَنَادَى أَنْ يَقُومُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنْ يَصُومُوا .

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   ایک اعرابی ( دیہاتی ) نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آیا، اور اس نے کہا: رات میں نے چاند دیکھا ہے، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پوچھا: کیا تم اس بات کی گواہی دیتے ہو کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود برحق نہیں، اور محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اس کے رسول ہیں ؟ اس نے کہا: ہاں، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اے بلال اٹھو، اور لوگوں میں اعلان کر دو کہ لوگ کل روزہ رکھیں ۔ ابوعلی کہتے ہیں: ایسے ہی ولید بن ابی ثور اور حسن بن علی کی روایت ہے، اس کو حماد بن سلمہ نے روایت کیا ہے، اور انہوں نے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کا ذکر نہیں کیا اور کہا: تو بلال رضی اللہ عنہ نے اعلان کیا کہ لوگ قیام اللیل کریں ( یعنی صلاۃ تراویح پڑھیں ) اور روزہ رکھیں۔
