Telecommunication has the future, without it not any kind of communication is possible either voice or data.
"Telecommunication is the assisted transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication".
Based on the above definition, Telecommunications has many flavors.

Few areas of specializations are:
*WWL Engineering (normally based on CDMA and its variants, few companies offering this kind of service already in Pakistan, Telecard, WorldCall, PTCL-V)

*Data Network Engineering (covers for data communications handling for Local Loop or WAN, and some other technologies like, Frame Relay, ATM, etc.)

*Fiber Optic Telecommunications Eng. (A widely used Medium in telecommunication, used in deployment of network infrastructures.)

*VoIP Engineering (after circuit switching, voip plays a vital role telecom, PTA, a telecom regulatory authority, gives the licenses for few of companies in Pakistan to work in it, and full-fill the needs of the upcoming load for international traffic for inbound and outbound. Few are: Worldcall, Callmate, ARY, Telecard, Global Telecom, and offcourse PTCL.)

*Wireless Engineering (WiMax, is the alternative way for traditional RF, few years back, WiMAX was too expensive and having used for v.limited b/w the communication towers, but now it is widely available for the consumers or said end-user markets. Wateen Telecom is using WiMAX widely for the purpose of many services. But Wireless has many other Technologies like Satellite Communication and many other variants in it.)

*Mobile and Cellular Communications (Similar technologies like wireless, but it has many technicalities, like cellular call handling, cellular network designing, BS, MS management, etc. It is v. interesting field, and has many opportunities as the teledensity grows.)

*Network Engineer
*Fixed Network Engineering (Traditional Telecom Engineering)
and many more. Variants of telecom are so many but you must specialized in one of any, then you can further classified into the next generations of telecom)
or
Certification:
CCIE (v. helpful to give you the practically exposure, basically any kind of telecom technology without the router is impossible, and router provides so many features. like call handling, call routing, inter-connections, etc.)

Before going further studies you must understand the basics (or atleast basic degree in this area) of telecommunications because every technology and its variants are co-related.

This filed having some good salary packages for the persons who are devoted and good theoretical knowledge about.

Continuously update yourself with upcoming trends.
Have a good luck towards Telecom Journey!

Regards,
Muhammad Ayaz
