TikTok Officially Reaches One Billion Active Users

TikTok officially announces reaching the milestone of one billion active monthly users. It has become the fastest service to achieve the feat, years ahead of Facebook and Instagram. The short-video social media platform sees rapid growth even after frequent bans around different regions including U.S. and Pakistan. Facebook reached 2.9 billion active users in June, showcasing a growth of 7% in a year. While TikTok shows an increase of 47% active monthly users, a sharp rise from 689 million users since July 2020. Moreover, in July 2021, it also became the first non-Facebook-owned App to reach 3 billion downloads globally.

TikTok has established itself as a serious competitor to Instagram and YouTube. Both services made short-video content services available. Instagram is actively promoting Reels, while YouTube is pushing their Shorts . The United States, Europe, Brazil, and South Asia are TikTok’s most important markets. It gets frequent ban and regulatory threats in several countries, including United States, India, and Pakistan at one point or another. However, against all odds, the service exhibits impressive growth.

The short-form video app was launched in 2016 in China. Its merger with Musical.ly in August 2018 accelerates the growth. Chinese multitational Technology company ByteDance owns the platform. It took only five years to reach one billion active users. Facebook and Instagram both took 8 years to achieve the feat. Launched in 2004, Facebook reached one billion active users in 2012. While the photo-sharing App Instagram, launched in 2010, garnered one billion active users in 2018. Additionally, the platform produces many social media influencers globally. The short video content creators on the platform are referred to as Tiktokers.
