Hajj 2023: Saudi Arabia’s Declaration of Possessions Requirement for Overseas Pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has announced new guidelines for overseas pilgrims traveling to the country for the upcoming Islamic Hajj pilgrimage. The Ministry of Hajj is urging pilgrims to disclose any possessions exceeding SR60,000 in value upon arrival to expedite entry procedures. The move comes as the number of pilgrims expected to participate in Hajj this year is set to return to pre-pandemic levels. Learn more about the updated regulations and the kingdom’s efforts to ensure a swift and smooth experience for all pilgrims.

Saudi Arabia has called upon overseas pilgrims heading to the country for the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage to declare their possessions worth more than SR60,000 upon arrival. This advisory aims to facilitate and expedite entry procedures, as the number of pilgrims planning to perform Hajj this year expected to reach levels seen before the global health crisis.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the Ministry of Hajj emphasized the importance of disclosing sums of money and valuable items such as foreign currencies, gifts, electronic devices, jewelry, and precious metals exceeding the SR60,000 threshold. Pilgrims advised not to carry large amounts of cash with them during their journey to Saudi Arabia, ensuring smoother and faster processing upon arrival.

The kingdom has already witnessed the arrival of several groups of overseas pilgrims, marking the first wave of Muslims from abroad who will partake in the Hajj scheduled for late next month. As part of the government’s efforts to restore normalcy, Saudi Arabia has announced that there will be no restrictions on the number of pilgrims from around the world participating in the upcoming Hajj. This decision signifies a reversal of previous limitations imposed due to the global pandemic.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia had reduced the number of Muslims allowed to perform the Hajj rites to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, approximately 2.5 million Muslims would attend Hajj annually. It is a religious obligation for financially and physically capable Muslims to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

By implementing these measures and returning to pre-pandemic levels of participation, Saudi Arabia aims to ensure a safe and fulfilling experience for all pilgrims embarking on this sacred journey.
