Sri Lanka's captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and sent Australia in to bat in the first match between the two sides in this Commonwealth Bank Series. Surprisingly, Australia chose the same side that beat India in Melbourne, meaning the batsman Peter Forrest, who had been expected to make his debut in this match, will have to wait for his first opportunity. Sri Lanka brought in the offspinner Sachithra Senanayake for his third ODI, after he played the final two games in their recent series against South Africa. He replaced Thisara Perera and that was the only change to their team. 'This wicket looks a fresh wicket, it hasn't been used,' Jayawardene said at the toss. 'There's a bit of moisture as well. We'll see if we can get an advantage up front … [I'm] not very sure about what sort of total you can post on this, whether to go hard up front or not.' Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Ryan Harris, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty. Sri Lanka 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Lahiru Thirimanne, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Dhammika Prasad.
