Karachi Traders Reject Government’s Decision to Close Markets Early

President Javed Shams of Anjuman-e-Tajiran Karachi has expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s recent decision to close business centers at 8 pm. He emphasized that if there is a continuous supply of electricity, markets should allowed to remain open until 9 pm. This move aims to address the concerns of local businesses and ensure their uninterrupted operations.

In a united stance, both Javed Shams and General Secretary Faizan Rawat of the All Karachi Restaurant Association rejected the government’s decision to enforce the early closure of business centers. They believe that this decision may negatively impact the thriving restaurant industry, which heavily relies on nighttime business, particularly during the summer season.

Farooq Chaudhry, President of the All Pakistan Restaurants Association, echoed similar sentiments and called for the immediate withdrawal of the 8 pm closure directive. He emphasized that while markets worldwide close early, restaurants often remain open until late hours to cater to customers. He stressed the need to consider the unique dynamics of the restaurant industry and its operating hours.

Additionally, Chaudhry highlighted the importance of provincial governments in implementing the decision to close markets at 8 pm. It was previously agreed upon that provinces would play a vital role in ensuring compliance with this directive.

Federal Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal, responded to these concerns, stating that the National Economic Council has approved the closure of markets nationwide at 8 pm as part of an energy-saving plan. This decision aims to curb energy consumption during peak hours and promote sustainable practices.

The debate between stakeholders in the business and restaurant sectors continues, with Anjuman-e-Tajiran Karachi and related associations urging the government to reconsider its decision. They stress the significance of providing a conducive environment for businesses to thrive while ensuring effective energy management.

As the discussions unfold, it remains to seen whether the government will revisit its stance on market closure timings, taking into account the concerns raised by these influential industry representatives.
