AZHAR KHAN

LAHORE

Man of the match Shaheen Shah Afridi led Lahore Qalandars to a thumping eight-wicket victory over Quetta Gladiators in the 20th fixture of the HBL Pakistan Super League 7 here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday night.

Chasing the small 142-run total, Lahore Qalandars were off to a flying start as their openers Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique provided them a good start as they of 41 runs. Fakhar continued to excel with bat and fired a fabulous fifty off 42 balls hitting six boundaries. Kamran Ghulam also shone with bat and hammered unbeaten 55 off 39 balls. Noor Ahmed and Ghulam Mudassar got one wicket apiece.

Earlier Lahore Qalandars won the toss and decided to bowl first. The decision proved dividend as the home side restricted Quetta Gladiators to a 141-run total for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Shaheen Shah was the man, who struck twice in the opening over. He first dismissed the dangerous Jason Roy on the second ball and James Vince on the next ball, which provided his side a perfect start.

Sarfaraz also departed for eight runs, as half of the Quetta’s batting line-up was sent back to the pavilion with the score of just 54 runs. Though Iftikhar Ahmed played a good 52-run knock and forged small partnerships, he was also dismissed on the last ball of the 17th over by Haris Rauf. Other batters contributed with small scores with Umar Akmal scoring 25, Hassan Khan 17, and Noor Ahmed 13 to take Quetta to a total at which they can try to defend.

For Lahore Qalandars, Shaheen grabbed two important wickets for 27 runs in four overs while David Wiese also claimed two. The other key Qalandars bowlers were Haris Rauf picked and Rashid Khan, who took one scalp each. Qalandars have now strengthened their hold of the number two slot on the points table and have one foot in the play-offs with five wins and 10 points from seven games. Gladiators are still at number four with three wins from seven games (six points).

Player of the match Shaheen Shah Afridi said: “Credit goes to the team, as a bowler when the team backs you, your performance automatically improves. In T20 any batter can take you apart but it is not that a batter has his day all the time. Today, I just wanted to make sure that I make use of the swing that was on offer and I am happy that it came off well for us. It is easy to lead such a wonderful and world-class bowling attack it makes my job as a captain easy.”
