These stunning photographs have been compiled by editors at National Geographic magazine for its famous Nature Photographer of the Year competition. The publication is seeking out 'spectacular' pictures showing animals, lands and environments around the globe. Among the editors' picks so far are a sublime shot showing a tidal pool in Norway, a mother bear and her cub walking together through water and a macaque receiving a head massage in Japan. The winner of the competition - which is open until November 12 at 12pm - receives a £5,500 prize. To enter, visit the magazine's special website.

Enchanted: A tidal pool at Lofoten Islands in northern Norway acts as natural eye catcher. With the high tides around full moon, white sand gets washed into the pool and then the magic unfolds

A Mother Bear and Cub: Photographer Anat Gutman said of this stunning picture: 'The three-months cub was so cute I almost dropped the camera and [ran] to hug him. Almost. Mother bear (huge female) was looking at me suspiciously'

Lust: This photograph was taken in the cold waters of Whyalla, South Australia during the annual Australian giant cuttlefish aggregation. The event features hundreds of thousands of cuttlefish on the lookout to find a mate. It is the only place where they are known to aggregate in such large numbers. Mating can be aggressive, with males usually dominating the females by 10 to one. Pictured: A larger male showing his dominance over the smaller female after they have finished mating

Birds and Shadows: Csaba DarÛczi was on his way home in the morning when he saw a gaggle of geese. Naturally, he immediately assembled his drone and managed to get this fantastic shot

Tadami Line: This railway connects Fukushima and Niigata in Japan. It is a single-track, non-electrified local line that runs through the serene countryside. The train goes over a number of bridges and passes beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, greenery in summer, coloured leaves in autumn, and snow in winter

Macaque Maintenance: This little monkey enjoys a head massage at the Jigokudani snow monkey park in Japan. The reserve has become a major tourist hot spot, attracting visitors from all over the world hoping to get a glimpse of these fascinating creatures huddled together in hot springs

Infinite Road to Transylvania: This photograph was taken in Cheia, which is in Transylvania, Romania. The impressively winding road was occupied by only a handful of vehicles

Coorg Yellow Bush Frog: This chummy little amphibian was photographed in the rainforests of Agumbe, Karnataka, in the southwest of India. The frog was formerly known as the blue-eyed bush due to the stunning blue ring around its golden eye

Mackenzie Mountains: This stunning image shows rich colours fading into the grey ruggedness of the famous mountain range in Canada. It was taken near the Nááts'ihch'oh National Park Reserve

Heaven on Earth: A magical moment in the morning, just after sunrise, in Fundatura Ponorului, Transylvania, Romania. The picture shows two horses in an impossibly green field
