(Source: shughal)

Pakistan is blessed with so much beauty that it is almost unimaginable that we should have to look anywhere else. The rarest and most exotic birds in the entire world grace our shores. Some have disappeared over time due to loss of natural habitat, while others continue to drop in from time to time, bringing with them their magnificent melange of colors and unique features for us to savor.

Pied Kingfisher

This noisy bird is hard to miss and resides anywhere near water. Traveling in pairs, the king fishers are always on the prowl for fish that makes its way anywhere near the surface.

Blue Capped Rock Thrush

Found in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, the Rock Thrush migrates to Pakistan in the winters. Fond of heights, they make their home in high trees and because of their size are very difficult to spot.

White-Capped Redstart

Found across most of Asia, the red start stands out because of its red color and white cap. Although still quite common, the bird is fighting a losing battle to loss of natural habitat.

Oriental White Eye

Found in the woodlands and marshes, the distinctive white ring around the eyes make this golden yellow bird a spectacle. Can be found near the swampland of Karachi and Balochistan.

White Throated Kingfisher

It is a tree Kingfisher, meaning it resides in trees and eats rodents. These birds are residents by nature and if they do move, they only migrate for short distances.

Demoiselle Crane

They migrate their way into Pakistan during the winters from China and the Himalayan region. Traveling in huge flocks, this red-eyed crane with its long black neck is admirable to say the least.

Pallas’s Fish Eagle

This majestic eagle is found in mountainous regions. Although not indigenous to Pakistan, they spend a few months in the Northern areas during the winter months.

Indian Golden Oriole

This golden beauty is a resident of Balochistan and is not too picky about its habitat. It does not like people though so a trip to deserted lands might let you catch a glimpse of it.

Little Egret

Found in the wetlands of Pakistan, this migratory bird is as graceful as they come. Hunters by nature, they pick their food in shallow water, be it fish, rodents or amphibians.

Black Bulbul

This specie of the bulbul is found near the Himalayan region of Pakistan. The bulbul has iconic status for its song and this one is no different. Nest building involves both partners, a remarkable process that speaks volumes of their intelligence.
