Who doesn’t like Mufta? We all love to grab our hands
on anything that comes without efforts. This mentality has taken the
nation with a blow. The race to become richer than others has taken its
root deep in our nation.
Electronic Media of Pakistan has cashed this mentality beautifully,
making the nation strangled. Game shows in Pakistan are developed on the
concept of winning exciting prizes by answering simple questions.
Initially it was assumed that these game shows are inspired from “Neelam
Ghar” of PTV. That was class apart. Simply unmatchable! The game shows
you watch currently are nothing but an attempt to make money and get
TRPs.

“Tukka Lagao Musalmanno” is one phrase of such shows that were broadcast
on baseless concepts. This phrase became popular in masses during past
Ramadan transmission of Geo. Amir Liaquat Hussain became the pioneer of
hosting game shows of this sort. He was no way near the charm of
legendary Tariq Aziz though! Still he managed to earn a reasonable
viewership and fan club.
The popularity of Amir Liaquat Hussain grew from being a religious
scholar to a TV host. Amir Liaquat’s Inaam Ghar was introduced on Geo
before Fahad Mustafa’s Jeeto Pakistan on ARY Digital. Following the
trend HUM TV has launched their own game show titled “Jeet ka Dum”
hosted by renowned Actor Faisal Qureshi.

If you can eat maximum number of gulab jamun in minimum possible time,
cycling with your wives sitting behind you, dance like crazy, or ball
juggling then you are qualified to win a motor bike. Sounds unbelievable
aren’t it? We reside in a society filled with individuals looking for
short cuts to become rich. This is an alarming trend and needs to be
discouraged.
Witnessing these current game shows running on television, the question
arises; what is the idea behind these shows? Ratings of the TV shows are
genuinely important for the channels. This makes us understand why these
channels are so enthusiastic to give away 800CC cars, motor bikes,
diamond rings or even BABIES? Yes! You heard it correct! Amir Liaquat
Hussain in his previous show “Amman Ramzan” gave away abandoned babies
to the childless couples in the audience. Is that a publicity stunt for
TRPs or is he genuinely interested in helping the abandoned children?
God knows better. Dr. Hussain is particularly controversial, apart from
being popular. He has been accused for promoting Islamic extremism while
still maintaining the element of entertainment with music, dance, games
and even jokes during the show. Any lame person can figure out this is
for fame and ratings!

Fahad Mustafa on the other hand is way better than Hussain, as he
thoroughly entertain the audience with his charming style. Engage the
audience with interesting games and segments and give away exciting
prizes. His good looks are one big reason for the success of the show.
Faisal Qureshi has joined the league of game shows, but it isn’t that
impressive like that of Fahad Mustafa and Amir Liaquat.
Advertisements and sponsors of the show are the major source of earning
for the channel. Teasers and promos of the upcoming episodes already
create the buzz among the audience. Channels are definitely earning high
perks then what they are giving away.

According to sources, the commercial institutions and sponsors save huge
amount of tax by investing in these game shows. The tax registered
institutions have the permission to spend on sales and promotional
activities for their business. According to Income Tax Ordinance 2001
Section 20, in order to facilitate the tax registered institutions sales
& promotional expenses are deducted from the income tax. So don’t think
that you can win a car totally FREE, 20% tax is deducted for sure.
What should be done?
Conducting a live game show is no doubt an amazing idea to engage
audience in lively activities. The authorities should not kill the
beauty of these game shows by replacing the general knowledge questions
with the lame segments. Classic shows like Kasauti, and Neelam Ghar are
still remembered for its charm and interesting content. Rating is not
everything. Moral values and ethics should not be missed!
TV Channels should wake up before it’s too late!
