Life style in Nushki (Balochistan) year 1956

(Munir Bin Bashir, Karachi)

This is the city where my childhood was passed

Every one likes that place where childhood is passed .But keeping that aspect seperate i claim that the life of people was very simple.

The students used to come to schools on donkeys or on camels during my childhood in 1956 There was a Camel parking area (not the car parking area) in the school. The main language of this area was Barohi but people were able to understand Urdu too. However the Urdu which they spoke was free of all grammars. For example when they have to say "will u drink water " they used to say "will u eat water" or "TUM PANI KHAYE GA ' .

During the winter season the nomads (KHANA BADOSH) called pawinda used to come here from Afghanistan to avoid the severe cold of that country. It was allowed to them to come in Pakistan in those days .

The circumstances in those days were so much better that we were never afraid of those people regarding any kidnapping.

I still recall that once i was going at the end of Nushki boundary when i saw 9--10 nomads ladies. They made a circle around me & started moving in a dance style. Then they started touching me one by one. i was hardly seven years old. Every lady touched me one by one & then moved to a fat lady .They were doing some strange actions with their hands .Now after 55 years i guessed that fat lady was pregenant & they were doing some thing for her blessing with some cute child.

The nomads used to prepare bread on the stones. For it they had a round stone & they used to wrap the wheat floor (ATA) around that stone & used to throw that stone in the fire .They were so expert in that type of making bread that none bread was found over cooked

"KURD" was a delicious food which was prepared by drying the curd by a special technique . Actually this type of dry food was prepared by nomads because they used to live under such conditions in which fresh food was not available.so this KURD could be used as food at such deserted places where fresh food could not be found , but still I feel the taste of that food on my tongue.
