Fashion and Islam

hijab as a fashion

In modem age, different people define fashion in different ways like:

“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”

“Fashion changes, but style endures.”

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

“A fit, healthy body—that is the best fashion statement”

“I don’t do fashion, I AM fashion.” etc

An important aspect of religion that must be observed is the Islamic code of dress for both men and women. The appearance is a sign of what one has in the heart. Therefore, the unique Islamic code of dress is one of many things that differentiate Muslims and Non-Muslims.

Today boys like to wear the colors meant for girls and girls like to wear what is meant for boys. Jewelry, that was meant to be worn by females in now seen in the necks and fingers and writs of boys.

The society is attacked by the storm of designers who in the name of style and fashion introduce indecent and vulgar dresses in every season. Islam has strictly prohibited dressing that in any way look vulgar and out of the prescribed standards of Islam.

Bukhari :: Book 7 :: Volume 72 :: Hadith 774

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet cursed effeminate men (those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners of women) and those women who assume the manners of men, and he said, “Turn them out of your houses .
The above hadith is a strict and clear cut reply to all these fashions that we see today. To wear dresses like girls/boys to act like girls/boys is strictly prohibited and curse of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w. is on them who do so. We see boys keeping long hair that present them like girls and we see girls that keep hair as small that present them like boys. This is all prohibited. There are male makeup artist whose manner is like that of girls. They speak, stand, sit and even behave like girls because they do not like the creation of ALLAH. Such people are to be cursed.
(Sahih Muslim, no. 2128)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “There are two types of people who will enter the Hell-fire, whom I have not (as yet) seen: People having whips similar to ox-tails with which they will beat people, and (secondly) women who will be dressed yet appear to be naked. They will seduce men and be inclined towards them. Their heads will be like the swaying humps of bacterial camels. They will neither enter paradise, nor smell its fragrance, even though its fragrance can be smelt from such and such distance.”

Do not we see women dressed up but still naked? There have been introduced stuffs so thin that they do not serve the purpose of covering body, instead such dresses serve the purpose to attract the opposite sex and hence the way to zina. How can these women claim to be in heavens when they are already prophesized to be in hell fire?
Quran: Sura Al-Ahzab 33:59

“O’ Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their veils over their bodies. That is most convenient that they should be recognised and not be molested”

This verse is a slap on the face of those fashion designers and those models that spread sin in the name of fashion living in the muslim society.

There is no place of such fashion in islam BUT if the dress is full, body is covered and no body part is revealed such dresses are allowed. Women are not permitted to do fashion in public but only at their homes in the premises of home.

I have no need to discuss all these views in a manner to heart any one and to point out our models and other peoples but I just want to tell if fashion is a name of modernization then “Animals are more modern than us”.
Clothes should be considered a great bounty of Allah Taa’la and one should wear them and express thanks. Undoubtedly if all clothes are worn whilst taking heed of the divine laws of Allah, it will assume a degree if Ibadah and lean to the nearness of Allah Taa’la.

The Prophet May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him said:

“Whomsoever utters the following supplication after wearing clothes, all his past sins will be forgiven- All praises are due to Allah who clothed me with this and which He bestowed upon me without any toil and effort on my part.”

The object of this discussion is to encourage the Ummah of Rasullullah May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him to act upon the divine ordinances of Allah and to be concerned about the spiritual and physical reformation of all of us.

“And Only Allah gives divine guidance and He is the True Helper.”
