05 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO TO PREVENT YOURSELF FROM HEAT STROKE

(Hira Mehmood, Karachi)

As we all know summers in our country are so hot, we have crossed 40 degree centigrade, and have even touched 47 in some areas of Pakistan. So here is a list of things you should do to prevent yourself from heat stroke.

1. Avoid excessive outdoor activities:
This is the best way to prevent heat stroke. Direct exposure to the sun can cause heat stroke. So, avoid going out in the afternoon when the temperature reaches its peak. And if it is necessary to go out cover your head with scarf or umbrella and stay in shade as much as you can.

2. Stay hydrated:
Drinking adequate water is the first thing you need to keep in mind in order to stay away from dehydration. Some experts suggest drinking 6-8 glasses of water every day, but in this summer you should drink 8oz. (i.e. 1 cup) of cool water every 15mins. You can also use home-made drinks such as fruit juices, lemonade, and salted milk-lassi. Avoid drinking coffee and tea. Eat 1 cup of yogurt, a day.

3. Wear light, loose fitting clothes:
Darker shades tend to absorb more heat. So, choose lighter shades while going out in the sun. Wear loose fitting cloths, preferably cotton.

4. Avoid diuretics:
Diuretics are substances or foods that increase the production of urine, which in turn results in loss of fluids from the body (i.e. dehydration). Some of the natural diuretics people should avoid in this summer are black cumin, ginger, parsley, caffeine etc.

5. Use hand fans and wet towels during load shedding:
During load shedding keep yourself cool by using hand fans, wet towels and spray water on your body.
