Prof Channar was gunned down on the campus on his way home when he left
office in his car on Jan 2.
A large number of university teachers under the banner of Sindh University
Teachers Association (SUTA) and employees, staged a sit-in outside the
administration block and demanded removal of vice-chancellor, constitution of
judicial commission to probe the murder, withdrawal of police and Rangers from
the campus and revival of students union.
SUTA President Syed Azhar Ali Shah said that the negotiating team appointed by
the chancellor had principally agreed to fulfil their first two demands by
Friday.
But, he said, he did not see any evidence of the materialisation of the demand
for removal of VC by tomorrow. According to him, the authorities instead
appeared to be providing support and protection to the embattled
vice-chancellor.
He said the delay in VC’s removal could aggravate the situation and force
teachers to resort to other means of protest.
He warned if the VC was not removed he would call a general body meeting of
teachers and staff and plan future roadmap to get rid of the VC.
Mr Shah appealed to civil society and well-wishers of academic institutions to
join hands with SUTA and urge higher authorities to consider teachers’ demands
and implement them immediately to save education.
